Best Boulder Happy Hours to Catch a Game
By P.S. Vann

There are a few advantages to living in the Mountain West when it comes to America’s pastime. Namely, that most games on the East Coast come on around 5 p.m., so you can catch happy hour food and drinks and watch the game as well. Here are five of Boulder’s best…

Lazy Dog
14th & Pearl St., Boudler

With 20+ HD flatscreen televisions, the Dog is hands-down the top place in town for any sports fan. Memorbilia from the CU Buffalos, Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, Avs, Broncos, and even the Toronto Raptors hang on the wall, which is sort of symbolic, because fans of all sorts flock to this place at all times to catch their favorite teams. With a Monday to Friday, 3 to 6 p.m. happy hour bringing $2 Bud, Bud Light, and Miller Lite, and 35-cent wings with a wide variety of sauces, its easy to see why. See listing

Harpo’s
29th and Arapahoe, Boulder

A Boston Red Sox banner outside the bar announces their Masshole leanings, but all fans are welcome at this off-the-beaten path establishment. A plethora of booths and televisions provide comfortable places to park it and enjoy the game. Wednesday’s wing night is a local favorite, as are the $1.75 pints and $7 domestic pitchers they serve during happy hour. Daily specials are available on weekends during football season. See listing

Old Chicago
11th & Pearl St., Boulder

Monday through Friday, fill up on $2.50 two-topping mini-pizzas at this chain restaurant located on the west end of the Pearl Street Mall. What it may lack in originality and ambience, it makes up for with two giant projection televisions in the back of the bar and a multitude of flatscreens elsewhere throughout. They have a huge selection of beers on tap (20+) and occasionally you’ll find non-traditional sports (think soccer and ultimate frisbee) on the TVs. See listing

Hungry Toad
Broadway & Alpine, Boulder

Speaking of non-tradtional sports, this English pub is the place to be if you prefer your sports with a European flair. Sure, they play big golf tournaments, baseball games, and our football on their three flatscreens, but the real time to go to this North Boulder gem is for an English Premiere league or international soccer match. Afterall, no one watches cricket, right?

West End Tavern
9th & Pearl Street, Boulder

This used to be a low-key, secret place to catch games when the more traditional sports bars were too packed, thanks to the big-screen HDTV they have in the under-used downstairs bar. But recent construction on the upstairs patio installed two projection televisions that play games—most often Yankees and Red Sox broadcasts—right on the wall of the bar. During happy hour (M-F; 3-6pm; 10-11pm Thurs.-Sat.) Stone IPA and a variety of other top-notch microbrews are just $3, as are house wines and margaritas. But a word of warning: The house marg is made with cranberry juice, and thus, pink, so if you’re with a group of sports buddies, order beer. See listing
